“The first time I crossed the Minch I saw a whale. My memory places it in a sliver of sunshine and I have since told people it was a minke. Truth is I have no idea what kind of whale it was, it was just a glistening back and burst of spray. Minke sounded good, likely even, as if people wouldn't believe me if I claimed to have seen a humpback or a sperm whale. It sounded humble, humble enough to visit the British Isles, humble enough to swim in the shade of the mountains.”
